Xiaomi has proven itself in the ultrabook segment and has now entered the mid-format market. The first 15.6-inch notebook of the company is remarkable not only for its size and design but also because it is equipped with the eighth generation of Intel Core processors and the discrete graphics accelerator NVIDIA GeForce MX150. More information about this, as well as other aspects of Mi Notebook Pro 15.6, we’ll cover in the review.
The laptop comes in a neat and quality cardboard box, very similar to the packaging of Apple laptops. Inside, in addition to the laptop, lies a compact power adapter with a power of 65 W / h and a cable with a USB Type-C connector on each side. The charger is very compact, but the plug requires an adapter
The similarity with the MacBook does not end with the packaging. The first time seeing Mi Notebook Pro live, you realize that for the sake of completeness of similarity, he lacks only an apple on the lid. On sale until only one color is available dark grey.
However, after a while, you begin to perceive the Xiaomi laptop not as a copy, but as a completely independent product made in the company’s traditional minimalism. Sometimes it’s even hard to say who is the manufacturer of the laptop due to the minimum of logos, especially from the outside.
The notebook was elegant and compact, as for the 15.6-inch model. The thickness of the case is 19.5 mm. The body is made of aluminum, pleasantly cooling the hand. Unfortunately, the lower edges are rather sharp and quickly lose their appearance with regular use. In the rest, the body is practical and does not collect fingerprints. The overall build quality is excellent, the laptop feels solid, both in a closed form, and each part separately.
On the right side is a card reader and two Type-C ports, one of them is used for charging, and both ports can be used to connect monitors. On the right side are two full-sized USB 3.0, HDMI and a headphone jack.
Keyboard and Touchpad
Having opened the laptop, and it can be opened with one hand, the first thing you pay attention to is the size of the touchpad. It’s pretty big, like for a Windows laptop and its diagonal is 6 inches. The touchpad is covered with glass, making it easy for the fingers to slide over it. The impression is slightly spoiled by a fingerprint scanner inscribed into it, which you occasionally come across with your finger.
The keyboard left ambiguous impressions. Fortunately, in Xiaomi decided to use the option without a digital unit, due to which all keys are of standard size, and the keyboard itself is located in the center of the case. The keys have a short stroke – 1.5 mm, which makes the press not very informative. You get used to it, but working out a habit will take time.
In the main block of keys, an off button is inscribed, in spite of this false pressings did not occur, moreover, to push it you need to apply more effort than for the other keys. There is a backlight with one brightness gradation.
The laptop screen is one of its main advantages. Mi Notebook Pro uses an IPS matrix with a diagonal of 15.6 inches and a resolution of 1920×1080. The screen is covered with a protective glass Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which gives the display unit additional rigidity. The frames around the display are not record-thin, but their thickness does not seem large.
The measured level of maximum brightness was 255 cd / m², and the minimum level was 19. Given the glossy display, the maximum level is almost always sufficient, except for direct illumination conditions. But the minimum brightness is sometimes a bit much, especially in the dark. The contrast ratio is 1: 1666. The color temperature slightly did not reach the reference 6500K and is about 6100K.
In the palette, there is a slight shift towards green and red hues, which makes the image visually “warm”. In general, the display liked, the viewing angles at it are maximum, the contrast is excellent, the light shots are minimal.
Three configurations of this model are available for sale. We have a younger version equipped with an Intel Core i5-8250U processor, 8 GB of DDR4 RAM and 256 GB SSD with PCI Express interface. In other configurations, there will be a Core i7-8550U processor and a choice of 8 o
The Intel Core i5-8250U is equipped with 4 cores, supports Hyper-Threading and runs at a clock frequency of 1.6 GHz. The maximum frequency in Turbo Boost mode can reach 3.4 GHz. The TDP chip is only 15 watts. Compared to the predecessor i5-7300HQ, equipped with 4 cores without HT, the performance of the i5 of the eighth generation is comparable in single-threaded tasks, but in multi-threaded, according to the results of benchmarks, the difference is 10-20%. In everyday work, the laptop works smartly and responsively, this is achieved not only through a fast processor, but also SSD.
Another interesting issue is the new discrete adapter GeForce MX150, according to NVIDIA, which came to replace the GeForce 940MX. From the predecessor, the novelty is distinguished by Pascal architecture with 18 nm process technology, GDDR5 memory, higher clock speed, in our case 1645 MHz in Boost mode and an increased number of ROPs (raster operating pipelines) – 16 against 8. The number of CUDA cores remained the same – 384, as well as the bit capacity – 64 bits. The amount of video memory is 2 GB, but in general, the MX150 can be equipped with 4 GB of memory. The reduced technical process allowed to increase the frequency while remaining in the same TDP.
As in game tests, and in benchmarks, the MX150 showed an increase of about 30% compared to 940MX. For example, in GTA V at minimum settings, smoothing FXAA and at native resolution, we got 55-60 fps, while the younger model Xiaomi – Mi Notebook Air 13, equipped with 940MX, under similar conditions showed 30-35 k /from. In CS GO at the maximum settings you can count on 70 fps and in Crysis 3 – 30 fps at medium settings.
The laptop is also equipped with a full set of wireless interfaces – here there is Bluetooth 4.1 and Wi-Fi 802.11ac with support for two bands.
Multimedia functions are represented by a pair of Harman speakers with a power of 2.5 watts each. The sound is loud, bass, without distortion, even at maximum volume.
For video communication, there is a web camera that shoots with a resolution of 720p.
Possibilities for upgrade are modest. Having unscrewed the 8 screws, you can replace the system drive and put one more at the expense of the additional port M.2 2280. The amount of RAM cannot be increased, it is uninstalled.
As a cooling system, a pair of fans is used to expel hot air in the direction of the display. The intake of cold air is carried out through the slots from below, so on the knees, the laptop quickly “suffocates”.
In AIDA64 with the full test of all components, the processor temperature was 70 degrees at the maximum frequency of 1.6 GHz. Throttling was not there, but there is no special power reserve, during the stress testing the processor only very briefly reached the peak frequencies of 3.4 GHz. Noise at maximum load is noticeable, but not excessive.
Thanks to a battery of 60 W / h, the laptop runs an average of 3-4 hours with an average brightness of the display and simple tasks like working with documents and browsing. In a full load of all components in AIDA64 and 50% brightness, Mi Notebook Pro lasted 1 hour and 10 minutes. There is support for fast charging, thanks to which in 35 minutes it can be charged at 50% of the complete charger.
